Common Core State Standards Initiative Regional Meetings Held in Illinois.
The ICCB organized regional meetings to gather feedback on the draft for English Language Arts and Mathematics. On October 2nd, 2009, Educators from the area met in Mt. Vernon, IL to discuss the proposed Common Core State Standards. Concepts that needed to be covered at the high school level to prepare students for college were discussed. Every high school graduate would be expected to meet each standard.
Ms. Brenda Bratcher who represented the Mathematics department from John A. Logan said that her group went over every standard and substandard and expressed opinions on whether these should be part of the Core State Standards. She remarked that recommendations were made that several standards be dropped and some amended. Calculators usage was a major topic of discussion.
Ms. Bratcher said that she would like to know what is being done at the elementary and junior high areas to prepare students for high school. “This is a weak part of the program and I feel it should be addressed first”, she added.
